Hrithik Roshan has turned down Tigmanshu Dhulia adaptation of the Shakespearean drama Hamlet. After Hrithik’s refusal, Tigmanshu recently announced “I may not make Hamlet because my writers and I feel that it doesn’t lend itself very well to cinema.”
Hamlet was a collaboration of thoughts by Goldie Behl and Tigmanshu. The two decided to adapt Shakespeare’s Hamlet with Hrithik on the lead. Apparantly, Tigmanshu and Goldie met Hrithik and discussed this subject. He initially loved it and gave a nod to Tigmanshu to go ahead and write it. The director instructed his team of writers to start drafting the script. Hrithik was very excited about it as he was happy to collaborate with good friend Goldie and he was also keen to work with Tigmanshu. But, Hrithik disapproved of the storyline of the son seeking revenge for his father’s death. According to him it was the same concept as his earlier film, Agneepath. He told Tigmanshu that he did not want to repeat the roles again and again. It is for sure that there is no animosity between Tigmanshu and him. As a matter of fact, they are already in talks to collaborate on another project.
As the director is making way to his cast, Vishal Bhardwaj has already cast Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor and Tabu for his version. Onir also seems to be interested in an adaption of the tragedy.
It would be extremely interesting to see the different interpretations of Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’ from a modern perspective.
